About the museum

The museum is housed in the Palazzo dei Priori, a 14th-century building overlooking Piazza Matteotti. It was designed in 1926 and completed in 1932 on the initiative of Professor Guido Vitaletti (1886–1936), who brought together the finds from Sentinum, the Roman city on the plateau between the Sentino and Marena streams, and donated his private collection. In 1979 it was renovated and organised into four rooms. The present display dates from the reopening in 2006, which added new finds and a prehistoric section.

On the ground floor a model reconstructs the Battle of the Nations of 295 BC, in which the Romans defeated Gauls, Samnites, Etruscans and Umbrians. The first floor houses marble sculptures, inscriptions, prehistoric finds, the mosaic with the Abduction of Europa, a funerary section and a display case dedicated to a bronze workshop, with a fragment linked to the Bronzi Dorati di Cartoceto di Pergola. The Aiòn room presents a full-size reproduction of the original mosaic, now in the Glyptothek in Munich, together with everyday objects. The last room holds a mosaic fragment with sea monsters, kitchen vessels, coins from the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD and 16th-century ceramics.

The ticket also covers the Raccolta Perottiana, which holds Byzantine reliquaries, including the icon of Saint Demetrius and a small wooden mosaic from the late 14th century.
