About the museum

The history of the Cabernardi mining basin, a hamlet of Sassoferrato, begins in the mid-1870s: on 9 July 1877 the discovery of a sulphur deposit in the Percozzone area was declared, and in 1878 an exploitation concession was granted to a private company. In 1899 the mine passed to the firm Trezza-Albani and in 1917 to Montecatini; in 1920 it reached its record of 840 employees, and at the start of 1952 it employed around 1,400 workers. For years it drove the economy of an area stretching from Sassoferrato to Arcevia and Pergola.

The exhaustion of the deposit led to a sharp reduction in staff, to the occupation of the mine in May 1952 and to its final closure on 5 May 1959. Many miners were transferred to other Italian plants, and others emigrated to Belgium.

The Parco archeominerario (archaeological-mining park), opened on 5 July 2015, is an open-air museum of about two hectares: visible are the large “Donegani” shaft down which the miners descended, the masonry calcaroni (sulphur-smelting kilns) and the “Gill” furnaces, a connecting gallery, the restored inclined plane and a former diesel depot converted into a multipurpose hall. The site is part of the Parco nazionale dello zolfo delle Marche e della Romagna (National Sulphur Park of the Marche and Romagna).

The Museo comunale della miniera di zolfo, in Contrada Nuova, is temporarily closed following an ordinance of the municipality of Sassoferrato of 18 October 2024; the ticket office has been moved to the park.
