About the museum

The Civica raccolta d'arte di Sassoferrato brings together paintings dating from the 15th to the late 18th century, from churches, convents, confraternities and private collections in the town and the surrounding area, which would otherwise have been dispersed. Today it is permanently displayed in a coherent route in Palazzo Oliva, a fifteenth-century building commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Oliva (1407–1463), an illustrious figure from Sassoferrato.

The route offers a brief journey through art from the late Middle Ages to the Baroque age. The altarpieces of the town's churches cautiously reflect the innovations of the early Renaissance, with works by Pietro Paolo Agabiti, a painter close in style to Venetian culture, while the influence of Raphael guides the local painting school. Among the paintings are two canvases by Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (1609–1685), a leading figure of European classicism; the other works are mostly from the Marche school.

In the same palace, on the first and second floors, is the Raccolta “Incisori marchigiani”, opened in 2009 and expanded in 2019 thanks to the donation to the Comune by the couple Mirella and Franco Pagliarini. It includes over 400 graphic works from the 16th century to 1900 by artists from the Marche, among them Federico Barocci, Luca Ciamberlano, Domenico Peruzzini, Edgardo Mannucci, Pericle Fazzini, Carlo Canestrari, Walter Piacesi, Francesco Garofoli and Arnaldo Pomodoro. A single ticket gives access to both collections.
