About the museum
On the Altipiani di Arcinazzo, at about 850 metres above sea level, stands the villa of Emperor Trajan (AD 98–117), a hunting residence of one of the best-known figures of the ancient world. The site, subject to recent excavation campaigns, extends over about 5 hectares on several terraces.
The civic museum, owned by the Municipality of Arcinazzo Romano, was opened on 20 June 2004 in two restored farmhouses within the archaeological area. The rooms house the most significant finds from the excavations: architectural and decorative elements, marbles, gilded stuccoes, opus sectile floors and frescoes, as well as evidence of how the work was organised during the construction of the villa.
A second exhibition space in the historic centre, in Via San Nicola, displays restored stuccoes and frescoes from the villa. The museum is part of the Sistema museale Medaniene and of the regional thematic archaeology system PROUST.
