Palazzo di Bonifacio VIII

Medieval palace in Anagni linked to the “slap of Anagni” of 1303 against Boniface VIII, visitable with an audio guide or a guided tour.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

Anagni is known as the city of the Popes: it was the birthplace of four popes and for a long time was a papal residence. In its historic centre, made up of austere buildings, Romanesque churches, bell towers, loggias and squares, stands the palace of Boniface VIII, the setting of one of the best-known episodes of the European Middle Ages.

The building is linked to the climax of the clash between two visions of power: Boniface VIII claimed the universal and eternal power of the Church, while the King of France, Philip IV, led the first national state in Europe, with strong financial needs. At the beginning of 1296 Philip IV taxed the French clergy and banned the export of money, gold and silver from the kingdom. In 1303 Sciarra Colonna reached the pope at Anagni with his men: this is the episode remembered as the “slap of Anagni”.

Today the palace is open to the public and run by Archeoares; the visit route is accompanied by an audio guide, while a guided tour in Italian is offered at a fixed time. A single ticket also gives access to the Museo Archeologico Ernico di Anagni.
