Museo civico di Alatri

Civic museum of Alatri in the 13th-century Palazzo Gottifredo, with epigraphic, archaeological and demo-anthropological sections devoted to ancient Aletrium.

About the museum

The civic museum of Alatri was founded in 1932 (according to other sources, in 1934) in the Palazzo Conti Gentili, and reopened to the public in 1996. It is now housed in restored rooms of the Palazzo Gottifredo, a 13th-century building commissioned by Cardinal Gottifredo Raynaldi and regarded as an architectural model for many noble residences of medieval Alatri.

The route includes a demo-anthropological section with agricultural and craft tools from the private Gambardella collection, an area on the ground floor devoted to 19th-century travellers and scholars of the polygonal walls of southern Lazio, and the archaeological and epigraphic sections on ancient Aletrium on the first floor. Here are the inscription of the magistrate Lucius Betilienus Varus, a 1:10 scale model of an Etruscan-Italic temple, a bronze figure possibly of Hercules, a polychrome mosaic threshold and First Style paintings from the domus of Betilienus.

Three rooms also house Corinthian, Attic and Etrusco-Latian vases recovered from Etruscan necropolises by the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police).
