About the museum
The MuMa was set up to house the skeleton of Siso, a young male sperm whale ten metres long who in the summer of 2017 became entangled by its tail fin in an illegal net off the Isole Eolie. The museum was created through a collaboration between Progetto SISO, the Comune di Milazzo, the University of Messina and its Museo della Fauna.
The skeleton is displayed in the Bastione Santa Maria of the Castle of Milazzo, together with the illegal net that trapped it and the plastic found in its stomach. The museum presents itself as a journey to rediscover the harmony between people and the sea, and gives particular attention to protecting the environment and educating young people.
The guided tour, led by biologists, covers Siso, the natural heritage of the sea and human impact, in particular plastic pollution. The museum works with UNESCO and is supported by the Gruppo Prada.
