About the museum
The museum was founded in 1843 as the private natural history collection of the Craveri family: the lawyer Angelo and his sons Federico and Ettore, who between 1840 and 1859 gathered many specimens in Mexico. The heirs donated the collection to the city of Bra in 1890, after Federico’s death.
Today the route unfolds over twelve rooms on three floors. On the ground floor are the Sala Craveri and the rooms devoted to mineralogy, geology, general palaeontology and local geopalaeontology; on the first floor, zoology, with marine invertebrates, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds; on the second floor, a section on the prehistory of the Ténéré and the Sahara, a room on the natural environments of the Bra area, the historic ornithological collections and a meteorology room.
The building has a large garden for events, an educational vegetable garden for activities with schools and a greenhouse of succulent plants. A multimedia scientific library, with about 7,000 monographs and 20,000 offprints, is open to researchers and university students.
