About the museum

The museum traces its origins to the Museo Popolare di Storia e d’Arte Braidese, opened in 1919 on the initiative of the teacher Euclide Milano, a scholar of ethnography and local history. The original plan included sections on the history of the Bra area, starting from the Roman period, when nearby Pollentia (today Pollenzo, a hamlet of Bra) enjoyed a period of prosperity, and continuing with the town’s illustrious personalities and the memory of the First World War.

In 1991 the collections were moved to Palazzo Traversa, a late Gothic building in the historic centre. The museum is now one of the Musei Civici di Bra, together with the Museo di Storia Naturale Craveri and the Museo del Giocattolo.

The exhibition is spread over three floors. The archaeology section occupies the ground floor, with stones and inscriptions, and the second floor, where a chronological and thematic route illustrates the history and finds of the Roman city of Pollentia. On the piano nobile (main floor), artworks and objects of historical interest are displayed, including paintings from the town’s picture gallery. In the loggia leading to the rooms, the remains of the Albero della Libertà (Tree of Liberty) planted in Bra in 1798 are preserved.
