About the museum
The Carlantino museum came into being between the mid and late 1960s, thanks to the interest of the local universities and the Soprintendenza and the commitment of some citizens. After the first finds, it was decided to create an archaeological repository to keep the finds and maintain the link with their places of origin.
The material on display comprises an almost complete range of objects from the archaeological areas of Monte San Giovanni, the Fortore valley and Santa Maria in Prato. After about fifteen years of closure the museum reopened in September 2025 with the exhibition “Passato presente. Carlantino e i suoi bronzi” (Past Present: Carlantino and Its Bronzes), which tells the cultural identity of a small community through its craft production.
On the ground floor are jewellery and ornaments of the peoples who inhabited the area from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages; on the first floor, in two rooms, the story continues with a 4th-century BC tomb context and the reconstruction of the buried person with his grave goods. The association Archeotrekking Carlantino runs the museum, guided tours and educational activities.
