About the museum
The MAACK, short for Museo all'aperto di arte contemporanea Kalenarte, was founded in Casacalenda on the initiative of the architect and artist Massimo Palumbo. The Kalenarte project was launched in 1990 by the town council of this small village in Molise and was then supported by the cultural association Kalenarte, founded in 1994; the museum proper dates from 1992.
The basic idea is to reinterpret neglected or anonymous places in the town through the relationship between art and architecture. The permanent installations, created by Italian and foreign artists, are not housed in a building but are spread across the municipal area: along streets, in glimpses of the historic centre, in squares and in woods. More than twenty works have been realised so far, including works by Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Costas Varotsos, Baldo Diodato, Carlo Lorenzetti and Palumbo himself.
The museum offers several routes, marked in different colours (red, blue, green and purple), which link the works across the territory. The MAACK also gave rise to the Galleria civica d'arte contemporanea Franco Libertucci, housed in the town hall, which collects the donations of the artists involved. The MAACK is part of the Luoghi del Contemporaneo network promoted by the Ministero della Cultura (Ministry of Culture).
