About the museum
The Galleria civica d'arte contemporanea Franco Libertucci is housed in the palazzo comunale (town hall) of Casacalenda, an 1860 building restored in 1987 to a design by the architect Massimo Palumbo and opened in August 1988. On that occasion some works by Franco Libertucci were exhibited, and the gallery is now named after him.
The gallery's foundations were laid with the 1997 edition of Kalenarte: the new space grew out of the MAACK, the town's open-air museum of contemporary art. The works come mainly from donations by artists who took part in the open-air museum, to which other artists who wanted to be part of the project have been added.
The collection presents several generations of artists, from masters of the second half of the 20th century such as Fabio Mauri and Achille Pace to established artists such as Franco Libertucci, Baldo Diodato, Carlo Lorenzetti, Renzogallo, Luca Patella and Giancarlo Neri, with a substantial presence of foreign artists. It comprises around 150 works, mainly paintings on canvas, sculptures and installations, of which 133 are displayed across the nine rooms of the gallery.
