About the museum
The MuFeG, the Community Museum of the Festa del Grano (Wheat Festival), is housed in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Jelsi and documents the community’s bond with the festival, which has been celebrated for over two hundred years every 26 July in honour of Saint Anne. The festival grew out of a re-enactment of an ancient propitiatory rite and of thanksgiving for the harvest, and out of devotion to the saint who, according to tradition, protected the town from the effects of an earthquake in 1805.
The museum is devoted to the floats decorated with wheat, a tradition that turns into art the age-old wish of the faithful to honour the saint with floats and works in straw. Visitors can trace the history of the festival and the stages of processing wheat, from grain to ear, through documents, paintings, photographs, videos and allegorical floats made in past years.
The museum carries out conservation, research, workshop and visitor activities aimed at individual visitors, groups and schools, including educational routes on specific themes. It aims to strengthen the tradition of farm work linked to the land and wheat, and to convey the appeal of the floats also outside the festival period. The site also has a bookshop, a documentation centre, a conference hall and an educational workshop.
