About the museum
The museum tells the story of the territory and community of Castel Bolognese, bringing together works and finds from antiquity to the twentieth century. Its three sections – ethnographic, archaeological and art – were merged into the institution in 1999, with the incorporation of the Antiquarium and the Piancastelli picture collection, previously kept in the municipal residence; the collections were later enriched by donations.
The first art nucleus dates from 1912, when the painter Giovanni Piancastelli, who had returned to Romagna after a long stay in Rome, donated a collection of his own pen drawings and paintings to set up a picture room; the Piancastelli holdings comprise about fifty works. Another important group is that of the works of Giuseppe Guidi, with etchings, enamels and ceramics, linked to the museum through his daughter Camilla.
In the archaeological section visitors can see the Tomb of the Warrior of Ponte del Castello, an Umbrian burial of the 6th century BC discovered just outside the town centre in 2011, with vessels, ornaments and weapons. A gilded plaster Roman matron and some small bronzes by Angelo Biancini complete the outdoor itinerary devoted to the artist.
