About the museum

The Museo civico di Castelleone was founded through the work of the local Gruppo Storico e Archeologico and is housed, together with the civic library, in the 18th-century Palazzo Brunenghi-Salvago, in Via Roma. The display documents the history of people in the area from the Mesolithic to the Early Middle Ages, with a major nucleus formed by the collections of Carlo Bianchessi.

From the Mesolithic come chipped-stone tools that attest to hunter settlements on the terraces around the ancient course of the Serio (Serio Morto) and the Casso; from the Neolithic, numerous polished stone axes, evidence of the first forest clearance in the Po Plain. The Early Metal Age is represented by flint arrowheads and an archer's wrist guard, while the Late Bronze Age is represented by the rich settlement of the Régona at Castelleone, with pottery, objects linked to metalworking and weaving, and a bronze axe with median flanges.

The Second Iron Age is illustrated by Celtic tomb goods from the Régona and from Corte Madama, together with bronze and glass armlets. The Roman period is documented by numerous finds, above all funerary goods from the Corte Madama necropolis and the Late Antique tomb of Cassacavra, with the remains of hobnailed sandals.
