About the museum
Paolo Gorini (1813–1881), who graduated in mathematics and physics, was a geologist, volcanologist and anatomical preparator. From his study of minerals came his idea of finding a formula capable of making organic tissues similar to stone, in order to preserve them. He lived in the Ospedale Vecchio in Lodi from 1834 to 1881, and his laboratory was visited by illustrious guests, among them Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1862; his preparations also inspired the macabre taste of the Scapigliatura literary movement.
The collection took the name Museo Paolo Gorini in 1981, when the exhibition hall was set up by Antonio Allegri and opened for the centenary of the scientist’s death. It is located in the former Sala Capitolare of the Ospedale Vecchio, overlooking the 15th-century Chiostro della Farmacia; since 2008 the preparations have been presented in a renovated display, to which a lecture hall has been added.
More than one hundred human and animal preparations are preserved, made in the 19th century, from the 1840s to the early 1870s, largely dry and often of a pathological nature, the result of techniques ranging from immersion in alcoholic solutions to deep injections into the cadaver. The museum’s website also offers a digital library with autograph documents and publications on the scientist’s story.
