About the museum
The museum was founded in 1994 and is run directly by CISNIAR, the ornithological association of the Modena area. The environmental education service has been active since the museum was set up, as has the library; many of the historical collections come from donations by schools and institutes in Modena.
The teaching rooms illustrate the ecological and natural aspects of the territory, such as wetlands, grasslands, underground habitats, woods and rocky environments, with display cases and dioramas. The collections include earth sciences, with Cretaceous fossils such as ammonites and sponges, the Brandoli collection and a collection of minerals; botany, with a herbarium of about 3,000 vascular plants and a collection of willows; mycology and lichenology; and vertebrate zoology, with about 5,000 specimens, mostly birds and mammals, as well as collections of invertebrates.
The library holds about 3,500 volumes, mainly on ornithology, which can be consulted on site during opening hours. The museum also offers advice and educational activities for schools.
