About the museum
The museum occupies the ground floor of the former Montecuccoli mill, in Piazza Matteotti in Marano sul Panaro. The building probably dates back to the 17th century, although sources do not agree on the date: according to some, the Montecuccoli came into possession of it in 1640; according to others, it was built in 1654.
The mill, powered by the Panaro river, was converted to hydroelectric production in 1907 and run by the company SEEE until 1973. In the 1960s, after nationalisation, it became the Enel power station of Marano.
The museum, which is also the municipality’s documentation centre, illustrates the first production of electricity with antique machinery and original equipment, and offers information on the canals, mills and workshops of the Panaro river and the Samoggia stream. On the first floor of the same building is the Museo civico di ecologia e storia naturale (civic museum of ecology and natural history).
