About the museum
The Museo Archeologico di Castro dei Volsci, the municipal civic museum, holds materials from the territory of the middle valley of the Sacco river, an area inhabited since prehistory. The museum is located in the hamlet of Madonna del Piano.
The display is divided into eight sections, accompanied by 42 thematic panels with photographs, plans and maps that illustrate the sites and contexts from which the finds come, from prehistory to the early Middle Ages; there is also a numismatic section. A lapidarium in the entrance corridor presents marbles from the Roman villa of the Casale di Madonna del Piano.
Among the most important pieces is the front of the sarcophagus of Artemisio, found in 1998 during restoration work in the early Christian basilica, which bears on its clipeus (medallion) the funerary inscription for a child, together with a fragment of a slab bearing the inscription of Trebius, a military tribune. The route closes with the last panel, devoted to medieval Castro dei Volsci.
