About the museum
The Itri brigandage museum, in the hometown of Fra Diavolo, is dedicated to the phenomenon of brigandage in the territory now called Lower Lazio, and presents itself as a research and documentation centre. The sources range from political, social and military aspects to religious, artistic and criminological ones.
The building was created with European Union funds for the recovery and extension of public buildings for cultural use: a small single-storey building near the via Appia, formerly a nursery school and then abandoned, has been joined by three new structures (a multipurpose hall, a tower with documentation and offices, and a library). As there is no fixed collection, the displays use mobile walls and panels on rails.
The route is organised like an archive and is divided into three sections: “Ragioni della Storia” (Reasons of History), “Ragioni del Mito” (Reasons of Myth) and “Ragioni del Luogo” (Reasons of Place). An audio-guided itinerary, “I luoghi di Fra Diavolo nelle memorie degli itrani” (The Places of Fra Diavolo in the Memories of the People of Itri), and an archive with a register of brigands classified as criminals complete the offer.
