About the museum
The civic museum of Mirandola was founded in 1963 after the exhibition held for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, which brought together works and testimonies scattered among municipal offices and storerooms. In 1983 it moved to the former Jesuit college and in November 2008 it was redisplayed in the Pico castle. In 2012 it received recognition as a “museo di qualità” (quality museum).
The collections, arranged in twelve sections, document the history of the city and of the Pico lordship (1311-1711) with paintings, coins, prints, furniture, documents and archaeological finds. The picture gallery includes court works and a Madonna with Child attributed to Guercino. The numismatic section holds Roman coins, coins of the Mirandola mint and medals, including some by Pisanello.
The earthquake of 20 May 2012 seriously damaged the castle and made it unsafe. The museum has been closed ever since: the picture gallery is temporarily housed in the Palazzo Ducale of Sassuolo, while the cartographic collection and the gold coins have been transferred to a vault in Modena. The castle is still undergoing restoration and no reopening date has been announced.
