About the museum

The museum is located in the Palazzo dell’Arcipretura, in the historic centre of Chianciano Terme. It was founded in 1923 as the Sala d’arte antica (old art room), on the initiative of the Comune di Chianciano and the parish of San Giovanni Battista. Today it holds church furnishings, canvases and panels belonging to the parish, the Comune and other churches in the area.

The route is arranged in three rooms and presents works and liturgical objects dating from the 13th to the 19th century: panel and canvas paintings, silverware and sacred vestments. Among the most important pieces are a wooden statue of the Madonna enthroned with the Child from the workshop of Nicola Pisano, dated 1265–1270, a large 14th-century crucifix attributed to Segna di Bonaventura, and a polyptych with the Madonna and saints by the Maestro di Chianciano.

A small 16th-century altarpiece showing Saint John the Baptist holding up Chianciano is particularly interesting, as it shows the old appearance of the town.
