About the museum
The civic ethnoanthropological museum of Montesano sulla Marcellana was established in 2001 by the municipality, and in 2011 the regional government (Giunta regionale) of Campania recognised it as a museum of regional interest. It grew out of an initiative by local citizens who collected and restored objects, tools and records of the life of the community, many of them donated by families in the town.
The museum is located in the historic centre, in the Vallo di Diano, a short distance from the Certosa di San Lorenzo di Padula. The circuit runs through fifteen rooms plus a garden: the entrance hall houses a lapidarium, while the other rooms hold artefacts linked to trades, the home and rural life of the last century.
The museum also carries out research, cataloguing and educational work, and is open to groups and schools of all levels, with guided tours by reservation. It is part of the Rete dei Musei del Vallo di Diano. In 2017 it received the Mazziotti–di Celso collection as a donation, which includes numerous 19th-century portraits.
