About the museum

The museum was established and opened in 1957 to collect, preserve and catalogue the finds from excavations carried out by the Directorate of the Provincial Museums of Salerno between Sala Consilina and Padula, where around 1,500 tombs were brought to light. In 1966 the entire Certosa was designated as the provincial archaeological museum.

Between 1957 and 1967 material from the tombs in the Sant'Antonio locality of Sala Consilina was added. The display has changed several times within the monumental complex: from the refectory to the cell of the Prior, then to the L-shaped room and the cloister of the Procuratori, which was used as a lapidarium.

The collections include finds from the 11th century BC to the 6th century AD, mainly from the necropolises of the Tanagro Valley: Iron Age grave goods, Attic Greek vases, antefixes, figured capitals, funerary statues and stelae, and materials from a Late Antique Roman villa. The museum is run by the Province of Salerno.
