About the museum
The museum grew out of Romano Dezi’s passion for palaeontology: from 1973 he and his wife Rita Ramazzotti collected fossils from the Macerata area and beyond, building one of the richest collections in the Marche and organising the first exhibitions and educational activities in the city’s schools.
In 1993 the municipality made the basements of the 16th-century Palazzo Rossini-Lucangeli available, later extended with the ground floor to about 400 square metres. In 2017 Dezi donated the collections to the municipality of Macerata, which established the Museo civico di storia naturale. The exhibition, initially devoted to palaeontology alone, has been enriched over time with other sections.
Since the end of 2021, thanks to the Associazione Amici del Museo di Storia Naturale, the collections have grown through donations from private individuals and through animals from the Centro Recupero Animali Selvatici of the Marche Region, which were subsequently taxidermied. The museum is part of the Musei di Macerata network and works with MuBi, the museum of biodiversity.
