About the museum
The civic museums of Palazzo Buonaccorsi occupy an 18th-century palace in the centre of Macerata, built by the Buonaccorsi family after they obtained patrician status in the city in 1652 and the county title in 1701. From 1697 the pre-existing buildings were incorporated according to a design by the Roman architect Giovan Battista Contini, a pupil of Bernini; in 1718 Ludovico Gregorini completed the palace with the inner courtyard and the Italian-style garden, of which the balustrade with vases and three stone statues of Hercules in Istrian stone survive.
The Museo della Carrozza was established by the Comune di Macerata in 1962 after the substantial donation of Count Pier Alberto Conti of Civitanova Marche, supported by the local Lions Club. The original core comprises six sporting models, such as the Spider Phaeton and the Mail Phaeton, and a general-purpose carriage, with saddles, bits, harnesses and other accessories; over the years service and sporting carriages, an 18th-century sedan chair and a 19th-century carriage have been added.
The ancient art section originates from the Borgetti donation of 1835 and from that of the painter Antonio Bonfigli in 1860, which formed the “Pinacoteca patria” (national picture gallery), housed since 1937 in the palace of the Library. The works include paintings by Carlo Crivelli, Carlo Dolci and other masters. The piano nobile (main floor) houses the Galleria dell'Eneide, while the 20th-century art collection derives from local Futurist activity of the 1910s and 1920s, from the Gruppo “Boccioni”, from the national prizes “Scipione” and from later purchases. The visit route may change because of restoration work following the damage caused by the 2016 earthquake.
