About the museum

The Museo civico di Polistena grew out of the activity of the municipal library, which over the decades recovered and gathered archaeological material from the area, inscriptions and finds from the town destroyed by the 1783 earthquake, paintings, plaster casts, bronzes and marbles by local artists, and a collection of around 2,000 objects of rural and craft culture. The museum is run by the municipality.

It is currently housed in two large rooms of the municipal library, on the first floor of the town hall. The municipality has bought Palazzo Sigillò, which is to become a “Palazzo della Cultura”: after consolidation and restoration work, the library and the museum are expected to move there.

The collections include fossils and archaeological finds from the area displayed in eleven display cases, coats of arms, inscriptions and fragments from the old town centre, including the Peschiera stone tablet of 1540, sculptures and paintings by Polistena artists such as the Jerace family, Vincenzo Morani and Marino Tigani, old photographs and prints of Polistena and neighbouring villages, and a natural history section with a herbarium of over 200 sheets compiled between 1911 and 1945. Among the best-known pieces is the grand piano built in 1867 by Angelo Riolo, the only piano maker in Calabria.
