About the museum
The museum in Rosarno is dedicated to ancient Medma, a city of Magna Graecia founded as a colony of Locri Epizefiri on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. The museum is located next to the archaeological area and opened to the public in April 2014.
The core of the collection comes from the sacred area of Calderazzo, excavated by Paolo Orsi in 1912–1913. A large deposit of votive objects was found there, similar to the one from the sanctuary of Mannella at Locri. The cult was directed above all to Persephone, protector of marriage, but Aphrodite and Athena were also worshipped.
The display presents the terracotta sculpture produced by local workshops: protomes with female faces from the mid-6th century BC, large busts and medium-sized statuettes such as standing offerers and deities seated on thrones. Also displayed are model shields and helmets, models of temples, fruit, vegetables, food and animals, the pinakes (votive tablets) that young women dedicated on the eve of their weddings, and bronzes, including phialai, shallow bowls used for libations.
