Natural history museum of Comiso with sections on palaeontology and zoology, over 30,000 specimens and one of the largest cetacean collections in southern Italy.
At the centre of the exhibition is the skeleton of a tyrannosaurid around eight metres long, the only one of its kind on display in Italy; alongside it are eggs, footprints and Cretaceous fossil finds.
About the museum
The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Comiso, founded in 1991, is a scientific institution devoted to the study and dissemination of palaeontology and zoology. It has over 1,500 square metres of exhibition space, an educational room and about 800 square metres of storerooms and laboratories, and is recognised as a scientific institution by the CITES service of the Ministry of the Environment.
The collections, some twenty-five in number with over 30,000 specimens, have grown over time thanks to fieldwork by the museum’s researchers and to donations from companies and private collectors. Over thirty years the researchers have published hundreds of studies in international journals and discovered fifteen new species, both fossil and living. The library holds about six thousand volumes on geology, palaeontology, zoology and archaeology.
The palaeontology section tells the story of the origin of life and the evolution of animals, with finds from Sicily and other continents, including a complete skeleton of Psittacosaurus mongolensis, a Brazilian pterosaur suspended from the ceiling and the dwarf elephant Palaeoloxodon falconeri. The zoology section, arranged systematically, includes molluscs, birds, turtles, sharks and the cetacean room, with 14 species and over fifty specimens from the seas of Sicily and Calabria.
