Museo civico archeologico Torrione La Rocca

Civic archaeological museum housed in a 15th-century tower in Giulianova, with finds from the ancient Roman city of Castrum Novum.

Opening hours

About the museum

The Rocca district occupies the highest and most fortified point of Giulianova. The town walls, probably completed by 1480, a few years after the foundation of the town, included three towers, of which only the one called “La Rocca” survives, at the corner.

Since 2001 the tower has housed the archaeological section of the Polo Museale Civico. It preserves evidence of the life of Castrum Novum Piceni, the Roman city founded around 290 BC at the mouth of the river Batinus, today's Tordino, south of Giulianova, on a pre-existing settlement.

The collection includes amphorae, pottery and various objects from burials. Among the finds, the historiated oil lamps stand out: produced at Castrum and shipped from its port to reach the most distant regions of the Empire.
