About the museum
The museum was born in the late 1980s as an educational project of the “Leonardo da Vinci” lower-secondary school in Scordia, on an idea by Professor Nuccio Gambera. As the collections grew, the Comune took it over and moved it to Palazzo Vecchio. It takes its name from Mario De Mauro, a liberal and anticlerical priest who founded the Circolo degli Onesti Operai di Scordia (Circle of the Honest Workers of Scordia) in 1862 and wrote studies in archaeology and history.
The museum preserves and promotes memories, works and objects that document the history, culture and local traditions of the area, in particular the rural and everyday life of Sicily in the past. It is organised in two sections, the ethno-anthropological one and the historical archive. The route is meant as a journey through time among old crafts, techniques, technologies and ways of life. The institution also publishes material on local history and culture. The museum displays the plaque from the portal of Palazzo Branciforte, which commemorates the rebuilding of Scordia by the Branciforte family.
