About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of the local historian and archaeologist Michele Janora, born in Montepeloso (today Irsina) in 1867 and died at just forty-three. His passion for antiquities led him to gather numerous finds, which were kept in the family palace. The collection was placed under state protection by the Ministry in 1948, and in 1981 the Comune di Irsina bought it as the heritage of the whole community.
Today the museum is housed in the former convent of San Francesco, in Piazza San Francesco, where a selection of around 300 finds, restored and studied, is displayed in six rooms of the left wing, arranged chronologically and thematically from prehistory to the Hellenistic age. The entire collection numbers over 1,600 pieces, mostly from necropolises or isolated tombs in eastern Basilicata and north-western Apulia.
Among the materials, pottery with geometric decoration, red-figure, black-glaze and plain ware predominates, alongside bronze and iron weapons and ornaments. A notable piece is a red-figure calyx krater showing Bellerophon fighting the Chimera, from the early 4th century BC. The convent complex also includes a 13th-century oratory with frescoes attributed to Roberto d'Oderisio and is run as a multifunctional cultural centre.
