About the museum
The museum tells the story of Campomaggiore through multimedia displays. The village was founded on 30 December 1741, when Baroness Marianna Proto, widow of Count Nicola Rendina, signed the founding deed. At the end of the 18th century Teodoro Rendina, influenced by the architect Giovanni Patturelli, imposed a chequerboard urban layout with a central square, as part of a project of social utopia.
The dream came to an end on 10 February 1885, when a landslide destroyed the village and forced its inhabitants to rebuild it higher up. The ruins of Campomaggiore Vecchio can now be visited along an open-air art trail.
