About the museum
The Palazzo Ducale of Tricarico was the residence of the counts of Tricarico, after the Norman castle had been given to the Poor Clares to found the monastery of Santa Chiara. The original structure dates from the early 14th century. After 1631, when the fief passed to Ippolito Revertera, Duke of Salandra, the complex was enlarged and took on its present appearance, which conceals the original structure of a castle.
In the Salone degli stemmi a permanent exhibition of archaeological finds from the area of Tricarico and the nearby districts is on display. The route illustrates the cultural dynamism of the middle Basento valley from the 6th century BC, with exchanges involving the Oenotrian and Iapygian centres.
One section is devoted to the Lucanian period, with the transformations of local communities between the late 5th and the 4th century BC and the emergence of numerous fortified settlements, such as Civita and Serra del Cedro in Tricarico, Oliveto, Oppido Lucano and Pietragalla. Later contexts help to explain events of the Roman period.
