About the museum
The museum is in Campo, a hamlet of Alano di Piave, in an area that was at the centre of fighting during the First World War between Monte Grappa and the Piave. The route was set up to help visitors understand what the Great War was, starting from the village’s “heroes”, and is laid out over two floors, one of which is also used for themed exhibitions.
Its distinctive feature is that it presents itself as a “museum of the recuperante”, the figure of those who roamed the mountains collecting abandoned war materiel and selling it to survive the poverty of the post-war years. For this reason some pieces are deliberately displayed in the condition in which they were found, rusted and unrestored. The collection grows through private donations and is complemented by a large archive of original paper material: documents from Italian and Austrian commands, topographical maps showing the trenches of both armies, decorations, coats of arms, artillery and trench life.
The emigration section, conceived as a complement to the war route, occupies the basements of the former elementary school in Campo: five small rooms, with audiovisuals and work tools, tell the story of the villagers’ departure after the village was destroyed, and two coal-mine settings are recreated as stage-like scenes.
