About the museum
About 1,000 square metres of the Roman and medieval town are preserved beneath the forecourt of the Duomo in Feltre. The area reveals remains dating from the pre-Roman period to the early Middle Ages.
From the Roman period there are private buildings with workshops, a room with hypocaust heating, paved streets and a large building with marble and mosaic floors, possibly the seat of a professional association. Later a long early medieval building (8th–9th century), probably connected with the first episcopal seat, was erected here, followed by a circular baptistery with two concentric rings (late 11th–12th century). The area was subsequently used as a burial ground.
The baptistery was identified in 1926 during redevelopment work; excavations took place in 1970–1972 and in 1976, the presentation to the public began in 1983 and the display was completed in 1987. After a long restoration, the area reopened in summer 2025, with guided visits by volunteers from the association Il Fondaco per Feltre.
