About the museum
The museum presents the site of the Trinitapoli hypogea, frequented roughly between 1800 and 1000 BC. It is not a natural cave but a sanctuary built through the organised labour of the community, according to a plan that took into account the landscape and the geological make-up of the ground.
The display tells the story through comic strips and easy-to-read information panels. The rooms show the remains of the so-called “Tomba dei giganti” and of the “Signora delle ambre”, and make it possible to reconstruct the religious imagination of ancient peoples through the remains of sacrificed animals, consecration ceremonies and grave goods.
Study of the skeletons indicates an average height of 1.69 m for men and 1.60 m for women, remarkable compared with contemporary European populations. The skeletal type of the Middle Bronze Age is similar to that of the Neolithic peoples who came from the East and settled in southern Italy. The museum is housed in a historic palazzo reachable by ramp and lift.
