About the museum
The municipal picture gallery “Francesco Galante Civera” is housed in the Torrione that dominates the historic centre of Margherita di Savoia. The building, dating from the 16th century, stands between Torre Pietra and Torre Ofanto and in the past served as a lookout post and a defence against Turkish raids.
The collection brings together contemporary art and a few sculptural finds: more than 150 works by artists from Apulia, Basilicata, Naples, Veneto, Lombardy and Egypt are on display. Among the most valued is the “Pastorello” by Francesco Galante, a painter of the Neapolitan school active at the end of the 19th century. There are also some reproductions of famous paintings by Raphael, Masaccio and Guido Reni.
