About the museum
Villa Colloredo Mels is a large noble residence in Recanati: the oldest core is medieval, the grand staircase dates from the 16th century, and the ceilings and vaults preserve 18th-century paintings. The name derives from the Friulian Colloredo Mels family, who became owners of the villa in the mid-18th century.
The Comune di Recanati bought the building in 1998 and housed the civic museum there, spread over three floors. The route brings together the city's historical, artistic and archaeological collections and tells the story of Recanati from prehistory to the modern age.
On the ground floor are the archaeological section, with evidence of the prehistoric communities of the area from the Neolithic to the Iron Age; the historical section, with Picene and Roman finds, the Bolla Aurea of Frederick II, coins from the city mint and the Statutes of 1405; and the modern section, with the ceramics collection of Rodolfo Ceccaroni.
On the piano nobile (main floor) are the picture gallery, with a medieval and a Renaissance part in which four works by Lorenzo Lotto stand out, and the section dedicated to Giacomo Leopardi, which holds books, documents, letters and the poet's death mask.
