About the museum

The Civico Museo Internazionale della Fisarmonica was inaugurated on 9 May 1981 in Castelfidardo, the town where Paolo Soprani started the first Italian accordion factory in 1863. The idea arose in February 1981 during a television broadcast, in which a local delegation proposed collecting old instruments. In 1998 Giuseppe Panini donated about eighty instruments, and in 2011 a portable organ, presented as the ancestor of the accordion, joined the collection.

The museum is housed in a 17th-century building of the town hall (palazzo comunale), fully restored, with more than 500 square metres of space. In 2020 the new rooms and the exhibition route were opened, retracing almost two centuries of the instrument’s history in seven thematic rooms: Gervasio Marcosignori, Grandi musicisti, Paolo Soprani, Costruttori italiani, La fisarmonica nel mondo, Astor Piazzolla and Creatività artigiana.

Among the most significant items are the first accordion with a celluloid case, built in New York in 1916, instruments that belonged to famous musicians (including a bandoneon of Piazzolla’s), a small organetto by Paolo Soprani dating from 1872 and a prototype inspired by a drawing in the Codice Madrid II. A craft workshop shows the makers’ tools and how an instrument is made; children can try some instruments.
