About the museum

The museum arose from the commitment of citizens concerned for the historical, artistic and natural heritage of Castelfidardo, thanks to the collaboration between the local section of Italia Nostra, the town council, local scholars and Dr Massimo Coltrinari. It describes itself as “a museum of everyone and for everyone”, and its theme is the Risorgimento, in particular the battle fought on 18 September 1860 for the unification of Italy.

The exhibition rooms are in Palazzo Ciriaco Mordini, where educational panels illustrate the campaign in the Marche and Umbria and the battle, alongside large geopolitical maps, firearms and edged weapons (donated or recovered from the battlefield), Piedmontese and papal uniforms, documents, medals, paintings and photographs. Among the most significant objects are Pius IX’s ampoule, the medal “Pro Petri Sede” and the trumpet of the 26th Bersaglieri Battalion; one room reconstructs the commander’s room with the battalion’s flag.

The museum is “dispersed” across the territory: it includes the Salone degli stemmi (Hall of Coats of Arms) of the town hall, with the painting by Giovanni Gallucci, the Monumento ai Vittoriosi on Monte Cucco, the Sacrario-Ossario (ossuary shrine), the battle area, the Selva di Castelfidardo, Villa Ferretti in Castelferretto and numerous commemorative stones and plaques.
