About the museum

The museum was founded in 1983 as the Stiftsmuseum Innichen, set up by the local historian Egon Kühebacher on behalf of the provost of the collegiate church, to ensure that the rich heritage of the chapter remained in San Candido and was visible to everyone. The chapter of San Candido, founded in 769, was first a Benedictine monastery and then a college of canons. For a thousand years it was the religious and cultural centre of the Val Pusteria.

The current seat is the Casa capitolare, whose exterior has remained largely unchanged since the 16th century. With the move, the museum took the name MIK – Museum im Kapitel, which also recalls the chapter's old granary (Kornkasten). The museum is run by the Kuratorium Stiftsmuseum Innichen.

The collections include ancient finds (vessels around three thousand years old, Roman coins), the treasury of the collegiate church with the 14th-century reliquary cross in rock crystal, monstrances, processional sculptures, liturgical vestments, paintings and frescoes. There is also an archive with more than a thousand parchments, manuscripts and incunabula, and a library with one of the largest collections of texts by Ramon Llull. From 2026 to 2028 the temporary exhibitions focus on the theme of textiles.
