About the museum

The museum is an open-air park of about forty thousand square metres, set among greenery in Castellanza, which houses hundreds of works (according to the website around six hundred and thirty sculptures and mosaics) in marble, stone, bronze, iron, steel, wood and glass. The idea goes back to Enzo Pagani, born in Legnano in 1920 and trained at the Accademia di Brera: painter, sculptor, mosaicist and art dealer, he ran the Gallerie Pagani del Grattacielo in Legnano and Milan in the 20th century.

Pagani conceived a “living museum” that grows over time, inspired by a visit to Torcello (Venice) in 1957, and opened the park in the 1960s. A labyrinth of hexagonal flowerbeds creates many possible paths, so that each sculpture can be viewed from different angles; most of the works were conceived for the outdoor space and some were made on site.

The collection brings together artists from many countries and movements, from Futurism to Dada and Surrealism, with names such as Jean Arp, Alexander Archipenko, Fernand Léger, Man Ray, Sonia Delaunay, Jean Tinguely, Raoul Hausmann and Michel Seuphor. The park also has an amphitheatre seating about 300 for summer art events.
