About the museum
The museum has been active since 2002, when it was inaugurated with an exhibition devoted to Marc Chagall. It is named after Vittoria Colonna, Marchioness of Pescara and friend of Michelangelo. The seat is a building designed in the 1950s by the architect Eugenio Montuori, which housed some faculties of the University “Gabriele d’Annunzio” before their move to Viale Pindaro; the interiors were renovated by Gaetano Colleluori for the new exhibition functions. The building stands in the centre of Pescara, in the green area of Piazza I Maggio.
The permanent collection consists largely of donations, including those of Gangai-Stoppato, Misticoni and Benini, and includes works by Picasso, Miró, Guttuso, Basilio Cascella, Francesco Paolo Michetti and other artists. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum has hosted numerous temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
According to the Ministry of Culture listing, the building is currently closed pending redevelopment work; no reopening date is given.
