About the museum
The sacred art museum named after Don Roberto Corvini holds the treasure of the Abbazia di San Salvatore on Monte Amiata. According to local tradition the abbey possessed great riches in silver and gold; despite the serious losses that followed its suppression, part of the treasure survived and is now displayed in the east wing of the complex, which was recently rebuilt.
The main works were restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. Among them are numerous reliquaries in gilded wood, the reliquary bust of Pope Saint Mark in gilt bronze, made in 1381 at the wish of Abbot Giovanni da Firenze, the chasuble traditionally attributed to the same pope, and a small Scoto-Irish reliquary casket dating from around the middle of the 8th century, regarded as a piece of great rarity.
The route also recalls the Bibbia Amiatina, the Latin Bible codex compiled in Northumbria between the late 7th and early 8th centuries and kept for centuries in the abbey: the original is in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence, while a facsimile copy has returned to the museum. The museum forms part of the abbey complex, whose Romanesque church was consecrated in 1035 under Abbot Winizzo.
