About the museum
The museum grew out of the exhibitions set up by the Pro Loco (local tourist association) during the chestnut festival from 1981 onwards. Residents donated objects of daily life, and in 1989 a permanent museum was opened, later enlarged. Since 2005 it has been part of the Sistema museale dell'Amiata grossetano (Museum System of the Grosseto Amiata) and of the Musei di Maremma network.
The seat is the 17th-century palazzo on Via Grande, formerly the town hall and courthouse of Monticello Amiata, later used as a home and a mill. The museum documents rural life and work in the area, an economy based mainly on chestnut and olive trees.
On the ground floor a 19th-century farmhouse has been reconstructed, with kitchen, bedroom and storeroom, and more than three hundred objects. In the basement rooms are an old oil mill, threshing equipment, a stable and a well, together with a small mountain threshing machine. Next to the museum is an educational workshop devoted to chestnuts, oil and material culture, from which two themed trails start: the Via della Castagna (Chestnut Way) and the Via delle Fonti (Way of the Springs).
