About the museum
The museum is housed in the 17th-century church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Santo Spirito, built at the commission of the Congregation of the Nobles on the site of an earlier chapel, which was enlarged to a design by Scipione da Paola. The building, which has a Greek-cross plan and an octagonal dome, was confiscated by French troops in 1806 and then passed to State property (Demanio). After restoration in the 1990s, it reopened in 1997 as a museum under an agreement between the Municipality of Rogliano, the Archdiocese of Cosenza and the Calabria heritage authority (Soprintendenza).
The rooms display canvases and altarpieces from the former Capuchin convent and significant works of southern religious art, including silverware, textiles and liturgical vestments. A prominent place belongs to the wood carvings of the Rogliano masters, active between the 17th and 18th centuries on commission from prelates and confraternities. Their work is recognisable above all in frames with a fixed motif: scrolls, volutes of acanthus leaves and a large pendant flower at the top.
The museum thus bears witness to the rich craft tradition of the town in the Savuto valley, where, alongside the woodcarvers, numerous tufa stonemasons also worked, whose work can be seen in the portals of the historic centre.
