About the museum

Since 2009 the museum has been housed in the monumental Sant'Agostino complex in Cosenza. Cosenza was the capital of the confederation of the Brettii (Bruttians), founded in 356 BC, and later a Roman colony.

The route begins with the inhabitants of the Stone Age, around 100,000 years ago, and continues with the Enotri (Oenotrians) of the Bronze and Iron Ages (1700–720 BC), who were in contact with Mycenaeans and Greeks, with the grave goods of the rich Enotrian necropolis of Torre Mordillo. There follow finds from the colony of Sibari, including fragments of painted friezes and clay figurines from the sanctuary of Cozzo Michelicchio, and those from Thurii, founded in 444 BC by Athenians and other Greeks.

One section is devoted to the Brettii, with material from Cosenza and its necropolises; other collections include Roman finds, inscriptions in Greek and Latin, and coins from Magna Graecia to the Middle Ages. One wing illustrates the history of the Risorgimento in Calabria with displays and exhibitions.
