About the museum
The Museo Seles was created to make known, through the history of the itinerant trades of the Valle Maira and in particular that of the acciugai, the historical and anthropological aspects of the community of the middle valley and its socio-cultural characteristics. It is part of the Ecomuseo dell’Alta Valle Maira.
The museum aims to be the point of reference for collecting the testimonies and documents of the valley’s acciugai, who came from the municipalities of Dronero, Celle di Macra, Paglieres and Macra. Until the 1960s the travelling anchovy seller was one of the most representative trades of the valley, practised first seasonally and then as a permanent occupation. Today the sale of salted fish is still carried on successfully in northern Italy by some hundreds of traders from families originally from the valley, although the handcart has been replaced by vans and containers.
