About the museum
The crypt of Santa Maria degli Angeli, founded around the year 1000, was for a long time a place of worship. From the 15th century it began to be neglected and fell into disuse. It was rediscovered by chance in 1929 during an excavation and restored, but the widespread damp of the walls and the risk of mould made it necessary to detach the frescoes.
The restored original frescoes are now displayed in a modern museum in the Villa comunale of Poggiardo. The crypt, carefully restored, can be visited on Via Don Minzoni, where artistic and durable copies in fire-retardant polystyrene have been placed in the position of the detached paintings, recreating their original appearance.
